Performing skills, and sharing their art.
A good trip, ARTISTIC CITIZENSHIP......

On Tuesday the 7th grade band, chorus and orchestra traveled to Edgewood home, Webster's at Rye and Sunbridge Home in Dover. We sang and played songs for the retirees to celebrate Valentines Day. We've been doing this for years, and the seniors love it. They laugh and talk with the kids about their memories of past loves and past music and the kids smiled and laughed in return. We stopped and ate lunch at the food court at the mall, that's always fun for the kids as well. And very easy for me. The chaperons that came told me that highlight of the day was when the girls sang the song "True Colors.'" I agree, they were fabulous, it was lovely.

The band gets it! We've been working on a rhythm in 6/8 time.
Six beats to a measure and the eighth note gets one beat... Really, it's usually counted in two,,,,, That is.... 1 2 3 4 5 6 . But then, in a few certain measures of this song, it is divided into 1 2 3 4 5 6 It's been an interesting challenge to get them to understand the different feeling of this, but they've got it. It all goes back to a JUBA rhythm I taught them in the early 6th grade. Yippee!!!! Good week. 6th grade learning how to play chords on the piano.
7th grade is working on rhythms. We tried out the new ipads this week and used a free app called RHYTHM CAT. We're also learning about the music of the Renaissance and all the freaky instruments that were developed then. 8th grade is learning about the music of John Philip Sousa and the march. We're also learning about the musical concept of syncopation. We're gonna continue with our music composition projects next week, do some more computer music, and start using the new iRig piano keyboards to control the sounds on our computers. Chorus is preparing for our spring shows, and 7th grade trip to nursing homes, and a 6th grade trip to sing on the radio. The band is working on learning music written in 6/8 time. This is a new and fun meter for most of them, and it's going fine. |
