Guitars and Drums for Music Classes
The REF funded all our Guitars for 7th grade guitar class. All the students in RJH learn to play the guitar in the 7th grade. First we learn chords, then move on to melodies, and playing in an ensemble. We take our guitar skills and use them to learn about the greatest music man has ever created. We don't just listen to the masters, we play their music.
If we're not playing guitars, we're playing the drums. Rhythms from Africa, Brazil.

Tone CHimes
The REF provided Suzuki Tonechimes to our general music classes. The tone chimes work just like the handbells you would see in a giant cathedral. The students learn to read music and play only their single note in the song, when it's put together, beautiful music.
Marching Drums for our band
The REF funded a grant to provide our band with drums for marching.
See us march in the Rye Holiday Parade, and the Memorial Day parade each year.
Computer Music
The students use various computer music programs to create original music. Click here to listen to a 15 second clip of a song created by an eighth grader. It is only her voice, recorded and re-recorded, altered and made into a short fantastic song.
RPM Challenge
Students at Rye Jr High joined the RPM Challenge in Portsmouth. They wrote an entire album of original music and recorded it using the software and computer provided by the REF. The album was a great success, and some of the music was played in a celebration of new artists at The Music Hall in March 2012. Click below to see a video the kids made to go with one of their original songs. Beneath the video, click the link to hear a song written by the students in memory of their dear friend Robert, who is no longer with them.

Junky Music Artist in Residence
Our Artist in Residence, Jeff Erwin, came and spent a week teaching all the kids to jam on junk. Melody, rhythm, texture, and form, all the ways to make great music.

Chorus Sings in Washington DC
The RJH Chorus went to Washington DC a few years ago to participate in the AMERICA SINGS! music festival. Five thousand singers from all across the US and 14 countries met in Washington, DC to sing. The REF provided us with much needed funds to supplement our fundraising, enabling us to go for three glorious days of singing and touring our nation's capitol.
American Music Grant
The REF provided funds to purchase musical instruments from the American music scene, both past and present. These instruments include contemporary guitars and keyboards, an old time banjo, a mandolin, concertina, harp, and many others that the students can now play and understand.
