Manually Create the File using iTunes
Before doing either method
Manually Create the File using iTunes
- Start iTunes and find the song you want to convert. (It must be an MP3.)
- (Optional) CREATE NEW MP3 that’s < 20 SECONDS
- Right-click the song and choose Get Info.
- Click the Options tab.
- Check the Start Time and Stop Time boxes, then enter times for each (no more than 20 seconds apart, the maximum length for a ringtone). I used 0:00 and 0:20, respectively, as "Spit It Out" has a perfect ascending lead-in.
- Click OK
- NOTE: Remember to Delete the 30-second version from iTunes and undo the Start Time/Stop Time changes to the original after Step 1 in the next section.
- Right-click the song and choose Create AAC Version. You should immediately see a new 30-second version of the song.
- Go to Recently Added.
- Right-click "View in Finder", and Drag that version out of iTunes and into the folder of your choice.
- Change the file extension on the new file from .m4a to .m4r.
- Double-click it and it immediately gets added to iTunes' ringtone library.
- Sync your iPhone.
- Go to your phone's settings and select your new ringtone.
Before doing either method
- Any firewall on your computer may have to be adjusted for iTunes File Sharing feature (probably not an issue on your Windows machine).
- In iTunes, you have to make sure the “Sync Tones” is checked.
- In Preferences, check “share my library” under the Sharing tab in preferences
- Syncing your phone after using both methods is what actually copies the Ringtone onto the phone
- Once added, you manage all “Tones” through iTunes and Sync.
